A profusion of pale-pink blossoms clothe the rounded form of Prunus ‘Charles Sargent’, creating a stunning springtime show. This ornamental cherry tree comes alive as abundant light pink flowers blanket its branches before the leaves emerge, contrasting elegantly against the smooth chestnut coloured bark. As the season progresses, shiny green foliage flushed with bronze hues unfurls, and come autumn, the leaves transform into brilliant orange-red tones for another dramatic show.
Plant bare root trees as soon as conditions allow (avoiding frozen and waterlogged soil). When siting your ornamental cherry, select a spot that is sheltered from strong winds to protect the delicate blossoms. Stake your new tree to anchor it while the roots establish. Water thoroughly at planting and keep the soil moist for the first year by watering regularly, especially during hot, dry spells. After planting, maintain a weed-free area around the base of the tree, and use a tree guard if rabbits or deer are an issue. Prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker, cutting back any dead, diseased, or crossing branches.
