A small, upright crabapple known for its unique white double flowers in spring, which have a pleasant fragrance and are a favourite among bees. The mid-green foliage takes on a bronzed yellow hue in autumn. This tree also produces small yellow fruits in autumn, though they are not suitable for culinary use – instead, they serve as a valuable food source for birds, adding to the tree’s appeal. ‘Snowcloud’ is an excellent choice for smaller gardens and urban areas as it’s pollution-tolerant.
Bare root plants should be planted out as soon as they arrive. If this is not possible, they can be heeled in temporarily (covering their roots with soil) or potted up. Before planting, soak the rootball in a bucket of water for half an hour and make sure to incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole. Stake firmly in exposed positions and keep the base of the tree weed free. Fertilise at the beginning of each year and water regularly during hot, dry spells. Choose a sheltered spot to protect emerging blossom. A rabbit or deer guard will protect against pest damage. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter.
